President’s Message

Winter 2022

Given the unchanged landscape of 2020/ early 2021, our annual meetings for the AAP and the MSP were forced to be virtual. The work of the MSP executive board was no exception— we moved exclusively to virtual meetings; challenging us to also grow our zoom skills! Dr. Tim Walsh continues to make our society run smoothly alongside the executive board. It takes collective effort, and countless hours from the team to ensure the success of our society and its programming.

The AAP has been working on a brand-new program that will be geared specifically for hygienists. Keep refreshing your inbox for updates! The Midwest’s own Dr. Kirk Norian is campaigning for the Secretary/treasurer position of the AAP. Please support him and wish him luck on a successful campaign! Dr. Steve Meraw worked hard to streamline our board of trustee election cycle– electing one trustee every year moving forward. If you are interested in a trustee position, please contact the nominating committee chair Dr. Beth Grys. In November there will be a change of the watch during the national meeting in Miami, as Dr. Jeff Wessel passes his trustee torch to Catherine Bishop. For those looking to get involved at a national level, the academy is seeking volunteers in many areas. Check perio.org or reach out to one of our District 4 Trustees for guidance.

The past year brought us into the most unusual circumstances for our annual meeting. Our Immediate past president Dr. Nabil Bissada hosted a successful virtual program despite not being able to meet in person. I am overjoyed that we will have the opportunity once again this year, to see one another in person. I believe that the success of our meetings is not only in the lecture hall, but also through our conversations with colleagues. There is something so inspirational about these face-to-face interactions with each other.

The Renaissance Hotel, Chicago is committed once again to be the site of an engaging in person meeting in 2022. Our very own program chair Dr. Tricia Crosby has organized a great group of talented speakers covering a wide range of topics. Kicking off the meeting on Friday is Dr. Bruno Azevedo. He will speak on frequently missed findings in CBCT scans. He is a dynamic lecturer with extensive knowledge of all things related to cone beams. Starting Saturday, we are featuring three international speakers who are inspiring clinicians around the globe with their progressive and aesthetically focused periodontal and implant treatment. Dr. Martin Wanendeya from Clapham, South London will be discussing the digital approach to full arch implant dentistry. Brazilian Dr. Ricardo Kern will speak on peri-implant tissue reconstruction in the aesthetic zone. He will take us through the workflow for pink free dental implant crowns. The meeting will wrap up Sunday morning with Dr. Paulo Carvalho from Portugal. His lecture focuses on approaching prosthetic design and mucogingival support of a full arch restoration leading to better comfort and esthetic outcomes for the patient. None of these lecturers would be possible without the continued support of our fantastic sponsors! It is rare to have all 3 of these clinicians together in one meeting, so please support the Society by attending and encouraging your colleagues to attend with you. It will truly be a meeting to remember.

I look forward to seeing all of you once again, in person!

Dr. Megan A. Ratliff
